The White House • July 29, 2019 President Trump makes 9/11 victim fund permanent  This morning, President Donald J. Trump signed into law a permanent authorization of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, which provides financial support for families who lost their loved ones as a result of the September 11 attacks.   Watch: President Trump on what America showed the world on 9/11 “Today, we come together as one nation to support our September 11th heroes, to care for their families, and to renew our eternal vow: Never, Ever Forget,” the President said. “Our nation owes each of you a profound debt that no words or deeds will ever repay.” But there is something we can do. “We can and we will keep our nation’s promise to you.” More than 100 Americans who were personally affected by the devastation of the September 11 attacks joined President Trump at today’s Rose Garden signing ceremony. These individuals included first responders, survivors, and family members of victims. Within minutes of the attacks, many courageous men and women rushed into lower Manhattan, the Pentagon, and a debris-strewn field in rural Pennsylvania to rescue the remaining survivors. For days, they fought to save every person they could find trapped in the rubble. For months, they continued the search for others who had fallen. All told, more than 2,000 first responders and survivors have passed away from illnesses directly related to the toxic fallout from those attacks. Even today, thousands more are battling health problems stemming from that day in American history. For years, corruption and poor leadership have cost residents of Baltimore their livelihoods and—in far too many cases—their lives. Baltimoreans have witnessed a rise in both violent crimes rates and poverty in recent years. In a city with largely one-party rule, Democrat politicians have enriched themselves and their families while failing their constituents for decades on end. President Trump wants cities like Baltimore across America to thrive. The only way to get there is by laying out all the facts—including those the Beltway media would rather ignore. Here’s the real story out of Baltimore that they aren’t talking about: Gun violence is surging, with more than 150 murders so far this year.   Baltimore’s crime rate was the highest recorded of all major U.S. cities in 2018.   In 2017 alone, there were 12,430 cases of known violent crime, including 382 rapes reported, 5,879 robberies, and 5,827 cases of aggravated assault.   Sen. Bernie Sanders likened the city to a “Third World country” in 2015.   Baltimore’s poverty rate of 22 percent is nearly double the national level.   Scandal-plagued leaders have lined their wallets while neglecting their community.
