WATCH: President Trump delivers West Point commencement address

President Trump delivered a commencement address on Saturday to 1,107 new officers graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

With many families and friends unable to attend the ceremony because of social distancing guidelines, President Trump took time to recognize and celebrate the incredible accomplishments of these young men and women.

“Few words in the English language and few places in history have commanded as much awe and admiration as West Point,” he said, calling the Academy “a universal symbol of American gallantry, loyalty, devotion, discipline, and great skill.”

Here are a few excerpts from what he told the Class of 2020 cadets:

  • “Every graduate on this field could have gone to virtually any top-ranked university that you wanted. You chose to devote your life to the defense of America.”

  • “You have come from the farms and the cities, from states big and small, and from every race, religion, color, and creed. But when you entered these grounds, you became part of one team, one family, proudly serving one great American nation.”

  • “The survival of America and the endurance of civilization itself depends on the men and women just like each of you. It depends on people who love their country with all their heart and energy and soul.”

  • “When it comes to bragging rights, no one can boast louder than the class that brought Navy’s 14-year football winning streak to a screeching halt. You did that. I happened to be there.”
The Class of 2020 cadets begin their careers at a crucial moment in U.S. history. President Trump believes the sacred duty of America’s military is to defend our country from foreign enemies, not to rebuild foreign nations. “We are not the policemen of the world,” he told the graduating class.

President Trump visited Dallas last week, where he outlined steps to address racial inequality in healthcare, resources and funding for small businesses, and education.

“The truth is the African-American community has been years ahead of the broader population in understanding the justice behind allowing parents to choose where their children go to school, whether it’s public, private, parochial, or religious school,” Vice President Pence said.

The Media Said Trump Didn’t Have a COVID Testing Strategy. The Media Was Wrong.

“The story of how the country went from nothing to more than half-a-million COVID tests on some days is a tale of inspired private–public cooperation,” Rich Lowry writes for National Review.

“The media often insisted that there was no testing plan, simply because the plan wasn’t centralized enough, a line of attack pursued by Democrats as well.”

“It's quite clear that City of Seattle elected officials are lacking the political will to enforce the rule of law. And this is the closest I've seen since being a 20-year professional in public safety service of our country becoming a lawless state,” Seattle Police Officers Guild President Mike Solan warns. Read more from Sam Dorman in Fox News.
Endless lockdowns hurt small businesses—and they may hit minority-owned businesses the hardest. “From February to April, the number of active black business owners fell 41% . . . If Covid-19 cases keep rising in the weeks to come, city and state leaders might reimpose a strict lockdown. They should bear in mind who’d be harmed most by the ensuing economic destruction,” The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes.
“Whether ‘Defund the Police’ actually means dismantling police departments, as it appears to in Minneapolis, or is an attempt to gaslight conservatives while neutering law enforcement, one thing is certain: The party yelling to ‘defund the police’ is the same one that desperately wants to disarm the citizenry,” Kylee Zempel writes for The Federalist.

Building the Movement: America’s Youth Celebrate 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage Call for Submissions

Building the Movement: America’s Youth Celebrate 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage
Call for Submissions

First Lady Melania Trump is excited to announce Building the Movement: America’s Youth Celebrate 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage, an exhibit honoring the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave American women the right to vote. The exhibit will launch this August and will showcase artwork by young Americans depicting this historic milestone. To create this exhibit, the First Lady is asking students across the United States and its territories for submissions depicting individuals, objects, and events representing the women’s suffrage movement. Their artwork will appear alongside images of women’s suffrage parades, marches, and gatherings that took place at or around the White House.

As we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 19thAmendment, it’s important to include our children in the conversation so they can learn and understand the history behind the women’s suffrage movement” said First Lady Melania Trump. “For decades, women leaders lobbied, marched, and protested for equality and their right to vote in the United States. It is my hope that this project will both support and expand the important conversations taking place on equality and the impact of peaceful protests, while encouraging children to engage in the history behind this consequential movement in their own home state.”

The White House is encouraging submissions from students in grades 3-12, and will select one artwork to be included in the exhibit from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, America Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. All applicants will receive a thank you note signed by the First Lady, thanking them for their participation in this special exhibit honoring the women's suffrage movement.

Submission applications can be found HERE. Entries must be received by July 6, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

To be considered, artwork must meet the following requirements:
  1. Two-dimensional, created on an 8”x 8” piece of paper. To submit, parents and guardians are asked to upload an image of your child’s artwork which can be a simple snapshot taken with a camera or a cell phone. Winners will be asked to send their original artwork via mail at a later date.

  1. Include a statement (up to 300 characters) about the artwork and how it represents women’s suffrage.

  1. Be based on one of the following categories: Suffragists, Suffrage Symbols, or Suffrage Events.
  • Suffragists: Portray a suffragist who inspires you. Many brave individuals dedicated themselves to fighting for women’s right to vote. Depict one of the well-known woman from the national movement or someone who did work in your state/territory.
  • Suffrage Symbols: Create your own button, ribbon, or sign. Activists and supporters wore buttons with messages such as “Votes for Women” or carried signs with statements to President Wilson: “Mr. President: How Long Must Women Wait for Liberty?”
  • Suffrage Events: Depict a historic march, protest, or other event related to the women’s suffrage movement. This can be a national happening or something from your state/territory.
To learn more about the women’s suffrage movement, please visit the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission website and review their state toolkits for more information on what happened in your state!

This exhibit is presented by the Office of the Curator in partnership with the Office of the First Lady.

Presidential Message on Men’s Health Week, 2020

Office of the Press Secretary
Presidential Message on Men’s Health Week, 2020

Each year, in the week leading up to Father’s Day, our Nation recognizes Men’s Health Week to raise awareness of the diseases and illnesses that affect America’s men.  By better understanding the unique risk factors that men face, we can promote healthier lifestyles and implement more effective prevention and treatment options for all men.

Over the past several months, the coronavirus has posed a significant health risk to all Americans.  Unfortunately, men are less likely to visit or consult with a medical provider when faced with a medical issue or concern, increasing the chances of complications with any illness, including the coronavirus, that could be avoided with early detection and treatment.  Accordingly, it is critical that men who show symptoms of the coronavirus, including shortness of breath, cough, fever, aches, or chills, immediately contact their doctor or healthcare provider.  Doing so will ensure that they receive the care they need and help prevent the spread of this disease.

The coronavirus pandemic has also highlighted the challenges to mental health that many Americans face, made worse by isolation, social distancing, and uncertainty.  In general, stigma about mental illness, such as depression, has kept countless individuals from getting the help they need.  Men in particular are less likely than women to seek treatment for mental health-related concerns.  The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act has enhanced access to health care and treatment services for all health conditions, including mental illness, while also reducing the likelihood of transmission of diseases like coronavirus by expanding telehealth coverage for the duration of this public health emergency.  This enables those in need to get care and support from the comfort and safety of their own homes.

This week, as we encourage America’s men to incorporate better health practices into their daily routines, we also recognize the countless Americans who help improve the health and well-being of our Nation.  Together, we will build a healthier, happier, and stronger America.
