Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding Executive Grant of Clemency for General Michael T. Flynn

Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding Executive Grant of Clemency for General Michael T. Flynn

Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Grant of Clemency granting a Full Pardon to General Michael T. Flynn.  The President has pardoned General Flynn because he should never have been prosecuted.  An independent review of General Flynn’s case by the Department of Justice—conducted by respected career professionals—supports this conclusion.  In fact, the Department of Justice has firmly concluded that the charges against General Flynn should be dropped.  This Full Pardon achieves that objective, finally bringing to an end the relentless, partisan pursuit of an innocent man.

General Flynn should not require a pardon.  He is an innocent man.  Even the FBI agents who interviewed General Flynn did not think he was lying.  Multiple investigations have produced evidence establishing that General Flynn was the victim of partisan government officials engaged in a coordinated attempt to subvert the election of 2016.  These individuals sought to prevent Donald Trump from being elected to the Presidency, to block him from assuming that office upon his election, to remove him from office after his inauguration, and to undermine his Administration at every turn.

The prosecution of General Flynn is yet another reminder of something that has long been clear:  After the 2016 election, individuals within the outgoing administration refused to accept the choice the American people had made at the ballot box and worked to undermine the peaceful transition of power.  These efforts were enabled by a complicit media that willingly published falsehoods and hid inconvenient facts from public view, including with respect to General Flynn.  They amounted to a brazen assault on our democracy and a direct attack on our fundamental political values.

While today’s action sets right an injustice against an innocent man and an American hero, it should also serve as a reminder to all of us that we must remain vigilant over those in whom we place our trust and confidence.  The people who sit atop our intelligence and law enforcement agencies have tremendous power to affect the lives of their fellow citizens.  The American people must always take care to scrutinize their actions, to hold them accountable, and to ensure that they use their immense power to uphold the rule of law rather than to harass, persecute, and jail their political opponents in pursuit of partisan political agendas.

Happy Thanksgiving to General Flynn and his family, and thank you all for your great service to our Nation!

Proclamation on Thanksgiving Day, 2020

THANKSGIVING DAY, 2020

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

On Thanksgiving Day, we thank God for the abundant blessings in our lives.  As we gather with family and friends to celebrate this season of generosity, hope, and gratitude, we commemorate America's founding traditions of faith, family, and friendship, and give thanks for the principles of freedom, liberty, and democracy that make our country exceptional in the history of the world.

This November marks 400 years since the Mayflower and its passengers faced the unknown and set sail across the Atlantic Ocean.  Propelled by hope for a brighter future, these intrepid men and women endured two long months at sea, tired and hungry, to arrive in a new world full of potential.  In the winter weather that greeted their arrival, they lost nearly half of their fellow travelers to exposure, disease, and starvation.  Despite unimaginable hardships, these first Americans nevertheless remained firm in their faith and unwavering in their commitment to their dreams.  They forged friendships with the Wampanoag Tribe, fostered a spirit of common purpose among themselves, and trusted in God to provide for them.  The following year, they celebrated a successful harvest alongside their Native American neighbors -- the first Thanksgiving.  This seminal event in the history of our Nation is a continual reminder of the power of faith, love, perseverance, prayer, and fellowship.

The Mayflower's arrival to the New World in 1620 also marks the arrival of the first seeds of democracy to our land.  Absent the rule of a monarch in an uncharted wilderness, these early settlers resolved to create their own government through what is known as the Mayflower Compact.  Defined by majority rule through elected leaders responsible for creating "just and equal laws," the Mayflower Compact represents the first chapter in the long tradition of self-determination and rule of law in America.  One hundred and fifty-six years later, our Nation's Founding Fathers resolved to break free from England, building upon the Mayflower Compact to establish an enduring government whose authority came solely "from the consent of the governed."

This year, as our Nation continues to combat the coronavirus pandemic, we have once again joined together to overcome the challenges facing us.  In the midst of suffering and loss, we are witnessing the remarkable courage and boundless generosity of the American people as they come to the aid of those in need, reflecting the spirit of those first settlers who worked together to meet the needs of their community.  First responders, medical professionals, essential workers, neighbors, and countless other patriots have served and sacrificed for their fellow Americans, and the prayers of our people have once again lifted up our Nation, providing comfort, healing, and strength during times of uncertainty.  Despite unprecedented challenges, we have not faltered in the face of adversity.  To the contrary, we have leveraged our strengths to make significant breakthroughs that will end this crisis, rebuilding our stockpiles, revamping our manufacturing capabilities, and developing groundbreaking therapeutics and life-saving vaccines on record-shattering timeframes.

During this season of gratitude, we also acknowledge those who cannot be with their families.  This includes the brave American patriots of our Armed Forces who selflessly defend our sacred liberty at home and abroad.  And we pause to remember the sacrifices of our law enforcement personnel and first responders.  We are deeply grateful for all those who remain on watch over the holidays and keep us safe as we celebrate and give thanks for the blessings in our lives.

This Thanksgiving, we reaffirm our everlasting gratitude for all that we enjoy, and we commemorate the legacy of generosity bestowed upon us by our forbearers.  Although challenges remain, we will never yield in our quest to live up to the promise of our heritage.  As we gather with our loved ones, we resolve with abiding faith and patriotism to celebrate the joys of freedom and cherish the hope and peace of a brighter future ahead.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 26, 2020, as a National Day of Thanksgiving.  I encourage all Americans to gather, in homes and places of worship, to offer a prayer of thanks to God for our many blessings.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
twenty-fifth day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fifth.

                             DONALD J. TRUMP

Remarks by President Trump at the National Thanksgiving Turkey Pardoning Ceremony

Office of the Press Secretary
REMARKS BY PRESIDENT TRUMP
AT THE NATIONAL THANKSGIVING TURKEY PARDONING CEREMONY

Rose Garden

2:26 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, thank you very much.  Please.  And I just want to congratulate everybody.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average just broke, for the first time in history, 30,000.  It's now -- (applause) -- that’s good.  That’s great for jobs, and it's good for everything.  And this is the ninth time that we set a record during the course of 2020, and it's the 48th time that we’ve set the record during the Trump administration.  And there's never been anything like that.  So I just want to congratulate everybody that worked so hard: the White House, but maybe most importantly, the people of our country.  It’s a tremendous achievement.

The First Lady and I are thrilled to welcome you all to the beautiful Rose Garden where the First Lady actually worked very hard on renovating it.  It was 61 years -- it was in rough shape.  Very big job, actually, when you go to the wires underground.  People have no idea how complex it is, but you've done a fantastic job.  Thank you very much.  (Applause.)

And we're also very happy to have with us my daughter, Ivanka, and Jared and Theodore, Arabella, and Joseph.  Thank you very much for coming.  (Applause.)  They like the turkey.  Thank you very much.

On behalf of the entire Trump family, I want to wish every American a healthy and very happy Thanksgiving.  We're here today to continue a beloved annual tradition: the official presidential pardon of a very, very fortunate turkey, because Thanksgiving is a special day for turkeys -- I guess, probably for the most part, not a very good one when you think about it.  The first turkey to dodge the White House dinner table received unofficial clemency when President Abraham Lincoln's son, Tad, begged his father to spare his new friend.

For the past 73 years, the National Turkey Federation has presented the National Thanksgiving Turkey to the President.  Starting under President George H.W. Bush, these birds have received a formal pardon every single year.

Today, it is my honor to present to you this year's lucky bird, Corn, and, just in case we needed him, Cob.  Corn and Cob.  That's not too hard to remember, is it?

These two magnificent gobblers were selected from the official presidential flock of 30 turkeys, some real beauties.  They were raised by the Chairman of the National Turkey Federation himself, Ron Kardel.  Ron -- thank you very much, Ron.  Please, stand up.  Great job.  (Applause.)  Ron, thank you for being here, and your family -- beautiful family.  Thank you very much for being here.  Appreciate it.

Like so many presidential flocks, this one started in the great state of Iowa in what can only been described as an act of blatant pandering.  And, by the way, I love the state of Iowa.

These two turkeys sought to win the support of Iowans across the state by naming themselves Corn and Cob.  After today's ceremony, these birds will retire under the care of skilled veterinarians at Iowa State University, a tremendous university in Ames.

Once there, people of all ages will be able to visit them and learn about poultry science, veterinary medicine, and the noble American tradition of farming.  We love our farmers, I’ll tell you.  (Applause.)  And we hope and we know that's going to happen -- that Corn and Cob have a very long, happy, and memorable life.

This year, our nation commemorates the 400th anniversary of the pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock.  After arriving in the New World, the brave men and women of the Mayflower endured a bitter and dangerous winter -- very, very dangerous winter.  Many were sick, most were starving, and all were praying for a miracle.  Thankfully, God heard their prayers.

From our earliest days, America has always been a story of perseverance and triumph, determination and strength, loyalty and faith.  This week, in a time that is very unusual but in so many ways, very, very good -- what we've endured and been able to endure, with the vaccines now coming out one after another.  It's an incredible thing that happened.  One of the greatest medical achievements that this planet has ever seen.

But it's time to remember that we live in a great, great country -- the greatest of them all.  And there's nothing even close, as far as I'm concerned.

Every American can be united in thanksgiving to God for the incredible gifts he has bestowed upon us: the blessings of family, community, and this exceptional, beautiful, and great country.  It's greater than ever before.

During this Thanksgiving, we extend our eternal gratitude to the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, and scientists who have waged the battle against the China virus, and we give thanks for the vaccines and therapies that will soon end the pandemic.  It's just -- just such a tremendous feeling to know that they're coming, and they'll be coming probably starting next week, or shortly thereafter.

We send our love to every member of the armed forces and the law enforcement heroes risking their lives to keep America safe, to keep America great, and, as I say, “America first.”  Shouldn't go away from that: America first.  (Applause.)

We give thanks to the priceless freedoms that we've inherited, and we ask God to watch over and protect our nation and its people during this incredible holiday and in all of the years to come.  We ask that of God.

Once again, Melania and I wish to thank everybody for your incredible courtesies and also wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

And now it's time for the moment of our guests of honor.  They've been waiting, and, in this case, he's been waiting for this.  And bring them out.  Look at that beautiful, beautiful bird.  Oh, so lucky.  That is a lucky bird.

Corn, I hereby grant you a full pardon.  Thank you, Corn.  What a bird.  (Applause.)  Thank you.

     MR. KARDEL:  (Inaudible.)

THE PRESIDENT:  Iowa farm.  I knew I liked you.  (Laughter.)  That’s great.  Beautiful.

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody.  Thank you very much.  (Applause.)  Thank you, everybody.  Have a good one.

12:31 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, thank you very much.  And I just want to congratulate everybody.  The stock market, Dow Jones Industrial Average just hit 30,000, which is the highest in history.  We've never broken 30,000.  And that's despite everything that's taken place with the pandemic.  I'm very thrilled with what's happened on the vaccine front.  That's been absolutely incredible.  It’s -- nothing like that has ever happened medically.  And I think people are acknowledging that, and it's having a big effect.

But the stock market has just broken 30,000.  Never been broken, that number.  That's a sacred number: 30,000.  Nobody thought they'd ever see it.  That's the ninth time since the beginning of 2020, and it's the 48th time that we've broken records in -- during the Trump administration.  And I just want to congratulate all the people within the administration that worked so hard.  And most importantly, I want to congratulate the people of our country, because there are no people like you.

Thank you very much, everybody.  Thank you.
